Editor's Blog: All or Nothing

There is this one jump in figure skating that is more difficult-if not the most difficult-jump to learn among the other jumps. One major reason is because it requires the skater to make an extra 1/2 rotation in the air. The rest of the other jumps require only...

Amor Vincit Omnia (Love Conquers All)

Love conquers all. The popular phrase was written by the classical Roman poet Virgil in one of his poems. It has become a painting, a song and a movie. But in so far as history is concerned, only one Man embodied this statement.

Love conquers all. The popular phrase was written by the classical Roman poet Virgil in one of his poems. It has become a painting, a song and a movie. But in so far as history is concerned, only one Man embodied this statement.

Love has been overrated, underrated and even a cliché. Yet in truth it is more powerful than anything else in this world. It was love that caused Romeo to die for Juliet, it was love that launched the legend of Troy, and it was love that conquered death, when Jesus Christ died on the cross on Calvary — it was love that saved you and me. It was love that opened the door for eternity (john 3:16).

Picture this with me, Jesus talking to God the Father, on our behalf saying, “Okay, if it’s for Jazz (Isaiah 49:1), I will gladly do it. I will go and die, so she might live. I will go and become mere man, so I can experience and relate to all her sorrow, her pain, her suffering, everything that matters to her — I will be able to know — because she matters to me.” Now picture this, David asking, “God, what am I Lord? Who am I that you think of me all the time? Why do you even care what happens to me?” (Paraphrased, mine; Psalm 8:4).

In all my sin, in all my rags, in all my weakness, in all my joys, in all my rebellion, in all my hate, in all my triumph, in all my pain — He loves. Through out the ages and through out history, there has never ever been anything, and certainly not no one ever, has had the chance even more so achieved separating Jesus from loving me. In our finite minds and in our limitless heart experience of love, this is too much to comprehend. But nevertheless it is true. It is true because it was written in His word. (Romans 8:28)

Today I was reminded of this, God’s love for me. I wrote it once years ago on one of my notebooks and while cleaning, this writing jumped out at me and just glared at me in the face and dismissed any lie and condemnation that was in my heart that was bothering me for the entire day. Amor vincit omnia. Love conquers all. His love conquers all. His love conquered me.

I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:16-19 (the message)
